Our planet

We are passionate about the planet and hope that all the children who attend Cannington Pre-School develop a fascination for looking after the world in which we live. Each year humans leave a huge impact on the environment and climate change is fast becoming headline news. Small changes can make a difference and it is more important than ever to educate a generation of planet protecting heroes. These heroes can pass their knowledge on to their friends and families and together we can get more people involved in their mission to care for the planet. Eco-Schools and Plastic Free Nurseries provides extra opportunities for children to explore environmental activities and enhance learning.

Gardening

We love to garden as it provides so many learning opportunities across all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage. During gardening sessions children are taught about tool safety, health and hygiene and learn new vocabulary. Each season provides a different aspect to explore from soil preparation to the growth and development of plants, sown from seeds. Children learn how to care for plants to keep them healthy. We like to involve parents by sending plants home so children can demonstrate their knowledge and continue their learning at home. If there is no garden at home parents are welcome to plant their child’s plant in the pre-school garden and monitor its development.

Opportunities for mathematical development are vast when gardening. Counting, measuring, comparing quantities, weight and sizes, positional language, developing a concept of time are just a few of the rich mathematical opportunities that gardening provides.

The Kindness Project

One of our favourite sayings is “In a world where you can be anything, be kind”. Random acts of kindness, no matter how small, can turn someone’s day around. A kind word, a smile, a text, a gift of appreciation or a simple gesture to let someone know that you care is a powerful tool to enhance a person’s well-being when needed the most. At pre-school we actively promote kindness to all, the planet, animals, insects and each other.

We teach our children about global citizenship and the importance of giving your child the opportunity to spread some kindness in our local community and beyond.

Sadly, too many children around the world still have no access to clean drinking water. These children can walk many miles, often alone, to collect dirty drinking water for their families before they can start their school day. Many schools still have no toilets and handwashing facilities for their pupils. We have the ability to change this and transform the lives of many children. Through the simple act of donating the clothes we no longer need, we can truly make a difference to a family, a school or possibly a whole community.

Our clothes bank generates income that the children participate in spending to make a positive impact on lives of others. Charities supported include WaterAid and the Sponsorship of Endangered Animals.
